Here's what teachers and students have said about Educake...

How does Educake track students' progress?

"The results grid allows me to instantly identify where each child, or an entire class, is struggling and change my lessons accordingly."

Ashley Hunt, Norton Knatchbull School, Kent

"Educake provides really detailed feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of my students."

Martin Abraham, Joseph Leckie Academy, Walsall

"The fact that students can challenge answers that are marked wrong and the teacher can respond, has led to some interesting dialogue between teachers and students which gives real insight into how students are thinking and the misconceptions they hold."

Mike Parrott, Northallerton College, North Yorkshire

"I look forward to embedding its use into the teaching of the new Science GCSE and ensuring that the students get additional regular quality feedback on their progress throughout the year in a quick and efficient way for me."

How does Educake improve understanding?

"We love the fact that Educake requires written answers, rather than being multi-choice, and so encourages students to use scientific words correctly and accurately."

Mike Parrott, Northallerton College, North Yorkshire

"I think the tests are particularly good for checking understanding of the content prior to exam-style practice."

Catherine Spencer, Subject Leader for Science, John Fisher School, Purley

"It's great for independent learning, the questions really test understanding of key concepts."

Here's a Review of Educake by the ASE

School Science Review June 2014, number 353

Here is the review from the current School Science Review, which you can read on the ASE website here.

"Educake is a new online resource, targeted at GCSE students (ages 14-16), which allows teachers to set examination questions that are self-marked. The resource is up and running for AQA and OCR Gateway and has an ever-increasing number of questions, nearly 4000 currently, meaning that you will not run out of homework to set. Other specifications are currently being worked on and will soon be available.

All the questions are linked to the specification so it is easy for teachers to set up. I found it very quick and easy to set up for classes and teachers, with a recent improvement to the site allowing a simple CSV upload of data and download of individualised results.

My less able students engaged well with this site, valuing the instant feedback. The higher ability students wanted more opportunity to answer longer 6-mark questions and did not feel as challenged.

One highlight of Educake is that if students get a question wrong they are given the correct answer, and can go back and try questions similar to the one they got wrong. It is also helpful that if students leave a test it takes them back to the place they finished off at.

Questions for KS3 will be available from Summer term 2014 onwards, included in the price of the GCSE package.

As a new company, Educake have acted upon feedback from teachers, with the features and quality continually improving.

I think this is a valuable resource and it suits the majority of my students, particularly in testing their understanding of content. This allows me to develop their examination technique in lessons and focus on the weaknesses in their understanding highlighted by Educake."
